Postural Muscles And Back Pain

A major cause of back pain is poor posture, caused by weak postural muscles. The postural muscles, which maintain the body’s posture and support the body against gravity are also called tonic muscles. Another kind muscle is a movement muscle or phasic muscle. These muscles move the body. Examples of phasic muscles are the gluteals and abdominals. Postural muscles include the muscles that run down the spine (erector spinae), the muscles that run down the back of the legs (hamstrings) and the chest muscles (pectorals). Postural muscles have great endurance and can support the body’s weight for long periods of time. But if these muscle become tight, posture will deteriorate over time and back pain will arise. Muscles also work together and compensate for each other’s weakness. If the postural muscles are weak or tight, the movement muscles will have to do more work and will tire easily.

Why Postural Muscles Matter To Back Pain

Poor posture is a leading cause of back pain. Postural muscles, also called tonic muscles, maintain the body’s posture and support the body against gravity. Other muscles, called phasic or movement muscles move the body. Examples of phasic muscles are the abdominals and gluteals. Postural muscles include the hamstrings at the back of the legs, erector spinae muscles that run down the spine and the pectorals or chest muscles. Postural muscles have a high level of endurance and can support the body for long periods. However, if they tighten up, posture is likely to be distorted over time. Muscles also depend on each other to be effective. In other words, if the postural muscles are weak or tight, the phasic muscles will have to compensate and will tire out easily.

Six Causes Of Back Pain

1.Weak muscles, caused by insuffient exercise, are a major cause of back pain. The body is a unit-the various muscles act together. The lower torso is carried by the abdominals as well as the lower back muscles. The upper torso is carried by the pectorals or chest muscles, as well as the upper back muscles (trapezius and lats). So any exercise plan for back pain need to strengthen and stretch not only the major back muscles, like the lats and traps but also muscles in the front of the body, particularly the abdominal muscles. The abdominal muscles (often called the core muscles) help to support the spine and upper body. The abdominal muscles comprise the internal and external obliques down the side of your waist, and the six-pack muscles or the rectus abdominus, that run down the middle of your abdomen.

6 Steps To Better Posture And Less Back Pain

Posture is vital to helping back pain, especially as we spend so many hours sitting. Here are six ways to help your posture and back pain. 1. When sitting at a desk, keep one at least foot flat on the floor and you should try to keep both feet flat. Here’s an experiment: Sit at your desk and lock your chair in the upright position (if your chair has an adjustable back). Place your hands on the desk, as if you are typing. Be aware of the shape of the lower back. Straighten your legs and put your feet on ground, on your heels. Can you feel the change in your lower spine? It’s changed shape. It doesn’t make total contact with the chair. Also, you can feel the mid-section muscles engaged in keeping your body upright. Now bring your feet toward the chair, putting them flat on the ground, with your knees bent at a right angle. What does your lower back do? It changes shape-it makes contact with the chair again. You can also feel that the mid-section back muscles are relaxed.
