Voodooism is the oldest and still existing form of religion in Africa. It has been practiced in this area since 10,000 years ago. The Voodoo that does exist in the western world has tinges of Christian elements that ensured its survival many, many years ago, especially when the French colonizers sought to eradicate African religion in Haiti. They had seen Voodoo as a threat to their control of the colony, which in fact it was and despite the severe punishments meted out, Haiti won its freedom and Voodoo played a big part in that victory. It took a while for the Catholic Church to make it’s peace with the voodoo sect, but did so in the’50s.

It is an old religion, but the acceptance of voodoo into the mainstream was a long hard fight. These days, though many still lack the proper knowledge on the religion, they have come to accept it as legitimate. To show unity, Catholicism incorporated drums and melodies of voodooism to their church services. By the year’70, they estimated that around 100% of the people of Haiti are already Catholics.
